I am elated to share the recording of my piece ‘Estudio tímbrico de lo efímero y volátil’, for flute, clarinets, objects with live electronics, viola and double bass, composed very especially for SUONO MOBILE Argentina, and premiered at RESONANCIAS Jornadas de nueva música 2023 in Córdoba, Argentina.
In the piece, both adjectives could suggest a coincidence in the condition of lightness, a term that refers to mass as a timbral dimension: ephemeral—what can be dispersed; volatile—what can fly. Notwithstanding, in this composition I also try to emphasise the uncertainty to which the ephemeral alludes in its condition of brief, not long-lasting; and the volatile in its connotation of changeable, inconstant, unstable or oscillating, all these, intrinsic conditions of timbre as an interaction process. This composition also explores the physicality and materiality of the sound sources as components of the same mechanic structure. Part of the uncertainty is based on the possibility for some materials to break. The live electronics attempts to take the vulnerability of the objects to the limit, processing the signal captured by contact microphones, which allows to intervene and transform sound from the friction itself, the articulation point, in order to create a new electronic entity, which is at the same time the expansion of the essence itself of the acoustic sound.
This work was awarded the Ibermúsicas Prize of Composition and Premiere of Work 2022, and this collaboration with SUONO MOBILE Argentina has been one of the most enriching and satisfying experiences of my career. I highly recommend their work.
