Bio

Michele Abondano (b. 1981, Colombia)

Composer, researcher, and experimental performer. Her work has been developed in the areas of instrumental music for soloist, chamber music, ensemble and orchestra, as well as electroacoustic music, including acousmatic compositions, experimental performances with live electronics, collaborations with dance, soundscapes, and installations. Her study on timbre has led her to approach it in her compositions as a process of interaction between the parameters of sound, which is perceived as a multidimensional and dynamic experience. She has been a fellow of the Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen as well as a winner of the Ibermúsicas Prize of Composition and Premiere of Work with suono mobile argentina, the Grant for the Creation of Contemporary Music awarded by the Colombian Ministry of Culture, the ECOES-UNAM Scholarship for an Artistic Residency at the Mexican Centre for Music and Sonic Arts CMMAS, and the Grant Melos/Gandini.

She was awarded a PhD in Composition at the University of Leeds, and her thesis, titled ‘The Composition of Timbre: A Multidimensional Approach’, was developed thanks to the AHC Doctoral Research Scholarship. She also holds a Master’s degree with Honourable Mention in Music Composition from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Previously, she completed a Bachelor in Composition at Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina, as well as a Bachelor in Music at Universidad Pedagógica Nacional where she received the Honourable Distinction. Her professional training also includes composition lessons with Malin Bång, Mark André, Clara Iannotta, Chaya Czernowin, Toshio Hosokawa, and Justė Janulytė.

Her electronic music has been programmed at international events such as Ars Electronica Festival, Espacios Sonoros, SONIC MATTER Festival, Festival En Tiempo Real, OUA Electroacoustic Music Festival, CLICK Electroacoustic Music Series, FIME Festival Internacional de Música Experimental, Spectra: Festival internacional de música electroacústica, and Audiograft Festival. Her instrumental works have been commissioned by Klangwerkstatt Berlin – Festival für Neue Musik with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Stiftung, the rainy days festival with the support of the Philharmonie Luxembourg and Luxembourg Philharmonic, Isabelle Raphaelis and Dalton Harris, Frauen im Licht, the Hannoversche Gesellschaft für Neue Musik for the project TRAIECT Vietnam, Aleksandra Demowska-Madejska with the support of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Collective Lovemusic, XelmYa, and Illuminate Women’s Music. Currently, her works are published by Babel SCORES.

In Colombia, Abondano has taught composition and music structures at Universidad de Antioquia, interdisciplinary creation and research at Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas as well as composition and music theory at Universidad de Pamplona. Her research has been published in Ex Chordis. Rivista di Cultura, Ricerca e Didattica degli Strumenti ad Arco (Milano University Press), the e-book Bitácora de Resonancias (suono mobile editora), the Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Timbre (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), the journal Ensayos: Historia y Teoría del Arte (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), and Revista ASAB (Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas).
